Why and how does the history of mining around Katydata matter?

In this workshop, we'll explore the human and non-human landscapes around Katydata. We’ll walk to the old monastery of Skouriotissa, we’ll see ancient Roman slag heaps, and we’ll hear about the importance of the Cyprus Mines Corporation (CMC) for the economic and social history of Cyprus in the early 1900s.

No prior knowledge of Cypriot history or of Greek is expected.

 

This workshop is organized in collaboration with bαhçές histories* of Cyprus, a Cypriot public history initiative.

This workshop is organized by Histories of Bahçes, a Cypriot public history initiative that has been running webinars, interactive walks, and workshops since 2021. The lead facilitator will be Aliosha Pittaka Bielenberg, a PhD student at the University of California, Berkeley whose research focuses on the history and society of Cyprus. Additional members of the Bahçes team who will be co-facilitating the workshop include Nur Çetiner, Maria Georgiou, and Loizos Kapsalis.
