Ragas & Talas

Workshop with Dr. Markus Schmidt

Sunday 14 July, 11:00-13:00

An introduction in Indian Classical Music

Indian Classical Music is a highly intricate art form centered on melody (raga) and rhythm (tala). Beyond its musical impact, it is regarded as a spiritual practice, with many musicians considering it the most profound path to self-realization. Improvisation within the strict framework of raga and tala is essential in invoking the musical spirits and energies.

The first part of the workshop will provide an overview of the concepts of raga and tala, and their correlation with spirituality and improvisation. Then, participants will learn to sing or play the notes of a raga using specific Indian techniques, before they finally delve into the concept of rhythm (tala).

This workshop is open to anyone interested in Indian Classical Music, regardless of prior musical knowledge or instrument proficiency. You are welcome to bring your instrument if you wish.
