Singing the makams

4-day seminar with Elena Xyda for vocalists

(Thu. 11 July & Fri. 12 July 10:00-13:00 & 16:30-19:30

Sat. 13 July & Sun. 14 July, 10:00-13:00)

Singing the Makams

This workshop serves as an introduction to the mapping of the Makams through the voice. The Makam music system, which forms the basis of the art musical tradition of  Constantinople and of various local folk traditions of our wider region, has been expressed in a wide and diverse range of vocal repertoire. During the workshop, we will study on a theoretical, but primarily on a practical level, both art vocal compositions and songs from relevant folk traditions on selected Makams. We will approach the songs interpretatively through understanding the structural features, the behaviour and the intervals of the Makams under study, while we will also explore their use in improvisation (gazel/amanes). The workshop is open to persons with basic experience in singing, who wish to become acquainted with the richness of these musical traditions.

*The subject matter of the workshop, as well as part of its repertoire, will be common with Harris Lambrakis’s instrumental workshop. The participants of the two workshops will spend some time of joint practice, while at the end of fourth and last day, they will come together to present the result of their work as part of the activities of Windcraft Music Fest.

  • Participation in the seminar is free of charge.

  • Registration is required.

  • The lessons will take place at The Mills in Linou, just 1km outside of Katydata.

  • Participants can stay overnight at the festival campsite (Katydata Primary School) or look for accommodation independently in the surrounding villages.
