The Tin Whistle

Workshop with Timo Bark

Sunday 14 July, 16:30-18:00

Traditional European six-holed fipple flute

The tin whistle has a firm place in the traditional music of the British Isles, especially Ireland. However, the origins of this type of flute go back much further and they can be found in many other countries in Europe and beyond. They can be made from a variety of different materials: Reed, wood, tin, metal and plastic. The tin whistle is a very versatile instrument on which a very wide repertoire can be played, from folk to early music to jazz.

In this workshop we will first get a brief overview of the history of the instrument and learn about the different types of tin whistles. We will then get to know the basics of playing together and work on our first melody. Participants will receive a simple new six-holed instrument for the duration of the workshop.

We will mainly learn traditionally by ear. However, sheet music will also be provided.

No previous knowledge is required.

Participation is limited to 15 people on a first-come first-served basis. Listeners are welcome.
